12 Inexpensive Ways to Treat Your Valentine

By Kristen Burgess

You can give your sweetie a wonderful Valentine’s Day, even if you can’t afford a dozen roses and a fancy dinner. What matters most is showing her (or him) your love and devotion. Take the time to read through these tips on how to create a memorable Valentine’s Day, even on a budget.

1. You can’t go wrong with a classic love poem. Find several that you like and that your beloved will find meaningful. Write them out with a smooth pen in your own handwriting. Then read them to your valentine. You can also take turns reading from a book of love poems, or reading a romantic story.

2. Write a story for her. Write down a vision of your future together – marriage, a house, children… or if you’ve already done those things, perhaps you can write about enjoying your retirement years together, once all the children are finally gone and you can focus on your love again!

3. “Shop around” for your dreams, goals, and ambitions. Take her out to look at houses in neighborhoods you both love. Take a drive through car lots to look at the cars, vans, and trucks you like. Take her to look at cabins, beach houses, or some other sort of vacation home that you’ll be able to give her one day. This is not only fun, it lets you discover just what she wants – and what you want, so you can put your dreams together and watch them become reality.

4. Write out a new set of vows (write in your own handwriting!) to present to your beloved over a candlelit dinner. Tell her how much she means to you and of your eternal devotion.

5. Bake heart-shaped cookies for her. Or make other treats you know she likes, like fudge, or caramels. This is a good activity to involve your children in. Cookies are really easy and you can have the children help decorate them for Mom (or Dad.)

6. Write a series of letters and mail them to her for a few weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day. You can pick a theme for each one (“the joy you bring” “you’re my best friend” “so much fun to be around” etc.) or you can just write from your heart. You’ll have her waiting by the mailbox every day. End with flowers hand-delivered with your final letter, or with a package containing a Valentine’s Day gift and letter.

7. Hire a babysitter and take a break from the kids! You can take your sweetie out for a less-expensive dinner, or you can have dinner as a family before the sitter arrives. Go on a walk in one of her favorite places – along the water, or to a museum or another exhibit you know she’ll like. Take her straight up to bed when you get home – wait until you know the sitter has the children sleeping sweetly!

8. A variation on this is to run her a nice, hot, bubbly bath. Take her upstairs and wrap her in her robe, then tell her she’s to go get in the bath. You feed the kids dinner, wash their faces, get them in pajamas, and send them to bed. Then set a delicious meal out for you and your love to enjoy together.

9. Plan a romantic movie marathon. Pick all the ones you know she loves. Pop lots of popcorn and have her favorite chocolates and sweets ready. Snuggle her close to you during the movies (and don’t complain even once!)

10. Write out 100 reasons you truly love her. Try and find a long piece of paper, or even tape paper together so you can roll it up into a scroll. Tie it off with pretty bows and give it to her.

11. Hide little notes around the house, and if you’re really ambitious, around her office. Leave them in place you know she’ll check. You can also send spontaneous little notes via email and drop a note into her mailbox.

12. Do something for her that you know she’s really been wanting you to do – and you really don’t want to do! Cleaning the garage, moving that old computer equipment out (finally) or anything you know she’d really appreciate you doing. Then just smile and tell her how much you love her when she notices (even if she fusses that you’ve “finally” gotten it done).

Most of these ideas will work for your guy or for your girl – so don’t feel like they have to go one way or another. Just enjoy your sweetie and have a perfect Valentine’s Day!

Tips to Plan the Perfect Valentine’s Day Activities

By D. Halet

How are you planning to spend your Valentine’s Day? Is a trendy restaurant coupled with an impressive gift on your agenda? If this is your usual Valentine’s Day activity, I am sure you agree, as does your significant other, it is time for a change. The V-Day activity options are virtually unlimited. You can find something new and better to do; it just takes a little thinking and creativity on your part. Use this following tips to spark some ideas on how to spend your Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day Activity Tip #1: Consider your partner.

It is obvious that you want not only yourself, but also your partner to have an amazing time this year. In order to make this dream a reality, you must think about what your partner likes to do by taking into consideration her personality and character traits. Is she more of a night owl or is she a go-getter during the day? Is she the type of person who prefers the indoors or would she rather walk around the block and enjoy the fresh air? All of these questions will aid you in your Valentine’s Day activity decision.

Valentine’s Day Activity Tip #2: Consider yourself too.

This is a thought that will be easier to think through. Just as with tip #1, you need to think about your own personality and the types of activities you like the most. All of the questions you had to answer about your partner should be answered about yourself too. This is the second step into helping you create a Valentine’s Day activity list.

Valentine’s Day Activity #3: What do you both have in common?

Now, look over both of the lists you compiled and figure out where the common ground lies. That probably clears up a lot of unknowns.

Valentine’s Day Note: What if you do not have anything in common with each other?

Don’t worry if you have realized there is no common ground between your two lists. You can always combine an activity from one list with one from the other, or you can even find an alternative to something you came up with. Of course, you may always ask your significant other if they have any Valentine’s Day activity preferences, which could actually make this process easier as you are getting input straight from the source. Either way you decide to go will work out just fine. But when you follow the above tips, your special someone will truly know you value her opinion and care about her interests.
